I won't forget you

We are each so atomically numerous and so vigorously recycled at death that a significant number of our atoms-- up to a billion for each of us, it has been suggested-- probably once belonged to Shakespeare.- Bill Bryson

I think about you often

of the people you once were

of the hardships you endured

and I cling onto the memories that we shared

like mushroom foraging with Grandma

and her endless wardrobe of shoes

or gulliver's kingdom with Grandad

and the stones he helped us choose

and I cling onto the stories that transcended generations

like how Grandad was a conscientious objector in the war

a pacifist before his time

or how Grandma met Grandad on a train to Edale

finding love amongst the mountains we still climb

I really wish we had more time together

but it brings me peace to know that your spirit will live on in us forever

we are after all nothing but your gene thieves

and perhaps one day your recycled atoms will form our babies

I won't forget you Grandparents in the sky

without whom there would be no you or I
